The farmer plucked Kancil off the sticky doll, put him in a bamboo cage and took him home. Deciding to have Kancil cooked in the morning, he left the cage in the yard for the night. He put a heavy stone on top of the woven bamboo cage so that it could not be easily overturned. Kancil was so distraught he could do nothing but lie quietly.

In the middle of the night, when the farmer and his family had gone to sleep, Kancil lay awake thinking. He spotted the family’s watchdog lying near the cage. Kancil called out softly to the dog, “Sst! Dog, come here! Let’s be friends. I’m the new family pet. Did you know that the farmer’s son is so fond of me that he’s going to take me to town tomorrow to see the big festival that the chief is sponsoring.”

Skeptical, the dog answered, “Hah! I don’t believe that. I’ve been with them for many years and they’ve never taken me to town.”

“Believe me or not, it’s up to you. You can believe me or you don’t have to believe me. But if you really are interested, I can arrange it so that you can go too.” Kancil said nonchalantly.
